Leaders of family run businesses across the North East of England are being invited to enrol in a new support programme to help them evolve and future-proof their organisations through the use of new digital technologies.

The four-month programme, Evolve Digital, will be run by TEDCO Business Support LTD in partnership with Innovate UK and is fully-funded by the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy. The package of support, worth £3,000, is free for all family businesses wishing to take part and is being launched for the first time in the North East to equip leaders with the tools and techniques they need to enhance leadership skills and boost confidence when it comes to assessing and adopting technology.

North East business leaders who sign up to the free sessions will either take part in an online cohort where they will benefit from peer learning and interactive sessions, or they will have access to an online series of practical materials and toolkits which take them through the journey to help grow their business.

Although TEDCO will be delivering the North East-based programme, Evolve Digital will be rolled out in all corners of the UK. It will form part of a new national research study which means participants will not only get the chance to help their own businesses but their experience will help inform the UK Government, shape policy and improve the support provision available to SMEs.

Carole White of TEDCO said: “Family businesses are tightly woven into the fabric of the UK and with close to five million family businesses in operation, they touch all sectors and employ millions of people. Their survival is key to the UK’s economic future; however, research suggests that family businesses are often slower to adopt digital technology which can impact on their growth and productivity.

“TEDCO have been supporting SMEs for decades and we are proud to be delivering this innovative programme for the North East region. The Evolve Digital programme has identified that family businesses in the North East need access to better external support to help act on the potential of growth technologies.

“Across the UK this new programme will provide hundreds of family businesses a much-needed boost to better understand digital technology, cut through its complexity and get to grips with the benefits and limitations technology can offer. This will hopefully help to ensure family businesses grow and thrive for generations to come.”

The programme will start week commencing 19 April 2021. SME family businesses across the North East may be eligible to apply to access this business support package, worth £3,000, if they employ less than 50 people and have been in operation for one year or more.
