Meet the MD: Emma Banks of ramarketing

What is it the company does?

Ramarketing is an award-winning creative, digital and PR agency, that operates in the global life science and pharmaceutical sector.

Describe your role in no more than 100 words

As the former head of an international life sciences software business, I have taken over the operational reins in Manchester and Newcastle from ramarketing’s founder Raman Sehgal, who has transferred to Boston to run the company’s first US office.

As MD I will manage our strategic European growth plans, ensuring we continue to deliver world class service to our clients at the same time as nurturing the unique culture that makes ramarketing a world-class business.

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?

I started work in a laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher after my PhD and very quickly realised it wasn’t for me so moved onto a job entering data for a small clinical research organisation in Hertfordshire. After having my three boys I joined a North East company in the same clinical research space, working my way through operational and then commercial roles to the CEO position.

What do you believe makes a great leader?

Humility, passion, consistency and determination – great communication skills and being able to walk the talk. This is aspirational and a work in progress for me.

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

No major challenges as such, but as my experience has been ‘client side’ I am having to quickly learn the agency ‘world’ on the job.  I consider this more of an exciting opportunity though, rather than a challenge.

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

I’ve never really felt stressed at work, but I am a singer with a local chamber choir (Voices of Hope – we won the national choir of the year competition in 2016 and recorded the music for the most recent Fenwick Christmas window) so having regular rehearsals and gigs is certainly a release.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A doctor. The medical field has always fascinated me.

Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about them?

A hierarchical setup. I firmly believe that no-one in a business should be any more important than anyone else. Everyone should be equally valued for the role that they play in keeping the cogs of an organisation turning. Yes, there will always be a person (or a small team) where the proverbial buck stops but that shouldn’t mean that anyone else is respected any less daily.

Where do you see the company in five years’ time?

Currently, we’re very much focussed on solidifying our presence as an international agency, while looking after our domestic hubs in Newcastle and Manchester. 

Over the next five years, we’ll continue our expansion plans with the hope of having offices elsewhere in the world by 2030.

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Always get under the skin of the business you work in/lead but remain as objective as possible – consistency of behaviour and strong ethics are key.

What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?

Build a network of people who will influence, support and challenge you. They will always keep you grounded.
