Local burger business, Meat:Stack, has gone against the odds and is set to open the doors to its first solo restaurant venture after months of the hospitality trade having been put on hold.

Launching on Friday 10 July 2020, the restaurant will open to diners from 9am to 10pm daily, following government guidance and with social distancing rules in place.

Following an extensive £150,000 investment, the American-style diner will sit at the heart of the Bigg Market’s recent redevelopment. Customers can expect Meat:Stack’s famous smashed and steamed cheeseburgers as well as fast and high-quality breakfast, lunch and dinner options from a revamped menu.

The restaurant is the brainchild of honorary Geordie trio, Allan Hyslop, Tom Westman and Charles Mair, who started the American-inspired cheeseburger business from a gazebo on Newcastle’s Quayside market in March 2016.

The team has since expanded through pop-ups in Newcastle’s Number 28 and the Dog and Parrot, before opening their first takeaway premises in the Grainger Market. They have also seen success in Edinburgh running a similar popup restaurant in acclaimed Salt Horse Beer & Bottle Shop for the past two years.

With the restaurant originally due to open in April this year, the founders faced uncertainty when they had to put the construction on hold. However, they weathered the storm and are finally looking to open the doors to the public next month.  

Speaking of the launch, Allan Hyslop, co-founder of Meat:Stack, commented: “We’re really grateful for our loyal following in the region and we are proud to continue to provide one of the best burger offerings in the UK.

"While it’s been an honour for Meat:Stack to sit within some of our favourite venues in our adopted hometown, we thought it was time for us to firmly establish ourselves with our own restaurant. Here at Meat:Stack we are about top quality food, served fast with exceptional service and reasonable prices. Since we all moved here and met in 2004 it has been a dream of ours to have such a business in this great city!

“Like many businesses, we faced a number of complications due to the coronavirus crisis and we wanted to say a big thank you to our customers for supporting us throughout this time. We are excited to welcome our loyal fans as well as new customers through the doors and for them to experience our friendly service first-hand.

“We have added some delicious new dishes to our popular menu, while making sure we stick to our roots and continue to offer our staple burgers that are smashed, steamed and served fast.”

The restaurant is the first of many eateries the trio plans to open across the UK.

Landlord of the Groat Market property, Michael Rye of George Rye & Sons Ltd, added: “We’re delighted to have Meat:Stack as our new tenants and to be able to hand the building across to another local business. The building of 41-43 Groat Market has been in my family for over 100 years, initially the home of our shoe business, and when the opportunity arose to work with the boys it was the perfect solution for the future.

“With the help of NE1 Business Development and the National Lottery Fund, I am thrilled to see the building restored to its former glory and once more the future looks secure with our friends at Meat:Stack firmly established there.”
