Meet the Business: Semperfli Fly Tying Materials Limited

Andy Kitchener, founder of Semperfli Fly Tying Materials Limited, talks to UMi about his business evolution, plans for the future and how Digital Enterprise helped them.

What is it the company does?

Manufacturing materials for fly tyers to use in tying of their fishing flies.
Describe your role in no more than 100 words

I am responsible for:

  • Research, development and design of new materials for the business
  • Manufacturing process implementation
  • All technology (PCs, networks, e-commerce B2B website, IP phones, photography) used in the business

How did you come to do the work that you do?

I used to run Shopcreator building e-commerce sites for SMEs to large businesses. We planned to semi-retire 12 years ago. However, I started The Essential Fly as a hobby business selling fishing flies worldwide via web, realised that lots of customers wanted the materials to tie their own flies and then started developing materials to tie those fishing flies with. This is Semperfli, a fast growth B2B manufacturer of fly tying materials.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

Managing new manufacturing processes and creating a worldwide brand.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?

Market leader for fly tying materials. With 20 staff and a turnover of £2m.
Why did you take part in Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange?

It was recommended by Business Enterprise and Strategic Business Growth Programme.
What has the Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange done for your business?

Helped with Digital Vouchers and digital growth of our business.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Write a plan and review it regularly. To review, take a day out of the office and get someone independent to ask questions to check reality rather than perceptions.
