Scottish pet wellness brand Bella & Duke has raised £3.5 million in its latest funding round, led by Mobeus.

The fresh investment follows on from a recent £100,000 loan from UMi Debt Finance Scotland, and will be used to help the firm expand into the cat food market and to grow sales, marketing and recruitment activities.

Chief executive Mark Scott and chief operating officer Tony Ottley each lost a dog to cancer and began investigating their pets’ diets, leading to questions over whether processed food was contributing to poor health among dogs.

The result was Bella & Duke, which now produces raw, healthy fresh pet food made with natural ingredients to over 45,000 dogs across the UK, serving 11 million meals a year.

Mark said: “This investment is great for Bella & Duke moving forward and reiterates to the industry how committed we are to our mission in getting raw pet food into the mainstream.

“We consult the latest research, speak with ground-breaking scientists and thought leading vets, look at clinical feedback and listen to our amazing customers, so that we know our meals will make a huge contribution in helping dogs achieve optimum health.”

Tony, who uses his background in the food industry to source the ingredients for the meals, said: “We see ourselves as a wellbeing company rather than simply a pet food supplier.

“Only three species on the planet eat processed food – humans, dogs and cats. Humans do it by choice, but dogs and cats don’t get to make that choice. Giving them species-appropriate raw food means they don’t have to eat processed food.”
