Mayor launches free travel passes across South Yorkshire

The Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, has announced that free travel passes will be available to people taking part in selected employment support schemes across South Yorkshire.

A total of £330,000 has been made available to offer time-limited free travel to people accessing these programmes and transitioning into work.

The eligible schemes are the Working Win Health Led Employment Trial; the Work and Health Programme; Pathways to Progression and Pathways to Success.

Between them, the four employment schemes have so far supported more than 7,000 people who are either out of work or struggling in employment due to a physical or mental health condition.

Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “When a person wants to work, they should be able to. The cost of travel should not be a barrier to finding employment. We have some innovative and ground-breaking schemes across our region that are supporting people each day to return to and stay in work. Working Win, for example, has so far supported more than 5,000 people who want to find or stay in work while living with a health condition.   

“If we can make this transition even easier by offering time-limited free travel on public transport, then we will enhance the prospects for getting people back to work.

“I’m proud that we’ve been able to fund supporting people back into work and help build a more inclusive economy where no one is excluded.”

Stephen Edwards, executive director for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), said: “Public transport provides essential connections to places of work.  It is often the easiest, cleanest and most convenient way for people to travel around our region, opening up access to jobs and new opportunities. 

 “We’re supporting this new initiative as it will make it easier for people to move into and stay in work, as well as creating more regular public transport users.”
